Surgery Guidelines for Pets

For pet surgery procedures, it’s typically recommended that you cease giving your pet food and liquids at least 12 hours before their scheduled surgery. We administer anesthesia and make sure your furry family member is comfortably under before starting the surgery. Our team monitors the state of your pet throughout the procedure to ensure they’re safe and not experiencing any discomfort.

Once the vet completes the pet surgery, they come out and talk with owners about how the procedure went and go over post-surgical instructions. Mountain Parks Veterinary Hospital staff continue checking in on our pet patients until it’s time to bring the animal in for a follow-up visit.

Anesthesia

Before surgery, we perform a pre-surgical blood screen. We use those test results, along with your pet’s anesthetic history, breed, preexisting conditions and age, to create an individualized anesthesia protocol. When warranted, we can schedule a board certified Veterinary Anesthesiologist to manage your pet’s anesthesia during surgery.

Post-Op Care & Follow-Up

Following surgery, all patients are kept warm and comfortable and are closely monitored. An appropriate course of Pain Medication is administered based on the nature of the procedure.  When your pet is discharged, we’ll provide detailed guidelines on home care and are always available post-operatively for questions or concerns. We also offer complimentary follow-up exams following most surgical procedures just for that added peace of mind that your pet is recovering as expected.

Laser Surgery Available

Our facility makes pet laser surgery an option for certain procedures. It’s safer and less invasive than traditional surgery techniques. Pets typically experience less bleeding, pain, and inflammation after undergoing a laser surgery procedure. It’s more sanitary since the laser device kills bacteria and sterilizes the surgical area, making it less likely that your pet ends up with an infection.

Procedures performed via laser surgery include:

  • Removal of masses
  • Spaying and neutering
  • Declawing
  • Skin tag removal
