With the recent outbreak of Canine Influenza in Chicago, we decided to share some resources developed by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) for Pet Owners.
It is important to note that the strain of the Influenza virus seen in the April 2015 outbreak in Chicago had never been seen before in the United States. All reported cases of Canine Influenza in the U.S. since the first reported cases in 2004 have been the H3N8 strain. The current vaccinations available for protection in the U.S. have only been proven to protect against the H3N8 strain.
At this time there is no evidence that the current vaccinations for Canine Influenza protect against the strain of the virus, H3N2, which was seen for the first time in the United States with this outbreak.
Please note: the vaccine we have is available for both strains in a single inoculation.
